Should You Rent in Milton?
Every year, I get a lot of people asking about Milton.
They’ve usually lived in the city for a while and are ready for a quieter lifestyle. After years of Toronto’s noise, cramped spaces, and high rents, they start seeking a slower pace.
Milton often comes up because it balances affordability with small-town charm, while still being close enough for an easy commute.
Let me share a few stories from clients I’ve worked with to give you a better idea of what it’s like to rent here.
Pros of Renting in Milton
More Affordable Rent
One of my clients was looking to move out of her condo in Toronto and find something bigger—without the Toronto price tag.
After a few weeks of searching, we found her a three-bedroom townhouse in Milton for the same price she was paying for a one-bed one-den in the city!
That’s the thing about Milton—rents are way more affordable, and you can stretch your budget further. It’s a big draw, especially if you’re a first-time renter or looking for more space on a budget.
Close Enough to the City
Milton is about 40 km from Toronto, and it’s close enough that you can still enjoy all the perks of the city when you want to.
I remember working with a couple who both work downtown but wanted to live somewhere quieter. They were nervous about the commute, but once we looked into the GO train schedules and the access to highways, they realized it wouldn’t be a big problem for them.
A Strong Community Vibe
One thing that comes up a lot with people who move to Milton is the community feel.
Many of my clients are looking to move somewhere that felt more family-oriented. Many are surprised with the welcoming vibe of the neighbourhoods.
There are always local events, festivals, and things going on that bring people together. It’s the kind of place where you actually know your neighbours, which is something that’s pretty rare if you’re used to a big city.
Nature is Everywhere
If you’re into outdoor activities, Milton has plenty.
So many of my clients, especially since the COVID pandemic, just love spending time outdoors.
And Milton is close to the Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail.
Even if you’re renting, you’ll have easy access to these beautiful natural spaces. Whether it’s a weekend hike or just a peaceful walk in one of the local parks, there’s lots of nature around here.
Young, Family-Friendly Vibe
Milton’s known for being a young, family-friendly town. A lot of renters I’ve worked with are young couples or families looking for more space and a place that feels safe for their kids.
There are plenty of parks, good schools, and family-friendly amenities. And if you’re in the same boat, you’ll find plenty of people in a similar stage of life, which helps create a real sense of community.
Cons of Renting in Milton
Traffic Can Be a Pain
One downside of Milton’s growth is traffic.
The town’s right at the intersection of the 401 and 407, and during rush hour, it can get pretty backed up.
Quiet Nightlife
If nightlife is important to you, Milton might feel a bit too quiet.
Some people who move from Toronto might miss the bars and restaurants right at their doorstep.
While there are a few spots around town, you’re not going to find the same nightlife scene as you would in the city. For clients like those, I usually suggest making the trip into Toronto or Mississauga when they’re in the mood for a more lively night out.
Job Opportunities are Limited
Milton is primarily a bedroom community, meaning a lot of people live here but commute for work.
If you’re looking for work in town, your options might be limited, depending on the industry. I worked with a couple who still have to commute into Mississauga and Toronto for their jobs. It’s something to keep in mind if you’re hoping to find work locally.
Public Transit Isn’t Great
Milton does have a GO station and some bus services, but if you don’t drive, getting around can be a challenge.
While public transit exists, it’s not as extensive as what you’d find in Toronto or Mississauga, so having a car is almost essential here.
Growing Pains
Milton’s been growing quickly, and with that growth comes some challenges.
There’s more development, which can mean more traffic and fewer green spaces. I’ve had a few clients who loved the idea of living in a quieter area but were worried about how the area would change as it continues to expand.
The good news is that Milton is trying to manage this growth responsibly, but it’s something to keep an eye on as the town develops.
So…Is Milton Right for You?
At the end of the day, Milton offers a lot for renters—more affordable housing (than other areas in the GTA), a close-knit community, and easy access to nature. But it’s not without its downsides, like traffic and limited job opportunities. If you’re looking for a quieter lifestyle that’s still within reach of the city, Milton might just be the perfect spot for you. It all depends on what you’re looking for in your next home.
